Do you want to be part of a dynamic organization well known for excellence and commitment to highquality and effective services? The City of Eugene Public Works Wastewater Division is recruiting for multiple Wastewater Operation 1 /2 positions.
The Wastewater Operator 1/2 performs journey-level operator duties in all phases of activated sludge process plant at a large complex facility and related off-site locations; expected to assume the Wastewater Operator 2 role with minimal instruction and supervision. Lead role responsibilities upon assignment.
Depending upon the knowledge, skills, licenses, and abilities possessed by the successful applicant, this position may be filled at either a Wastewater Operator 1 or a Wastewater Operator 2.
Salary Range:
WW Operator 1 - $26.66 - $33.24/hourly - $55,452.80 - $69,139.20/annually
WW Operator 2 - $29.12 - $36.31/hourly - $60,569.60 - $75,524.80/annually

Department/Division: Public Works Department / Wastewater Division
Work Schedule: Day shift for training purposes then rotate to Swing shift after 6 months. 3:30pm -2:00 am. Positions designated to work a Swing shift or Graveyard shift receive an $0.80 per hour shift differential.

Must reside in the state of Oregon and be able to report onsite for work as needed in Eugene, OR to meet business needs.
The City of Eugene will follow all required COVID vaccinations, exceptions, and guidelines based on the essential functions of the position.
Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following
- Performs routine inspections for proper equipment operation. Monitors instruments, gauges, and other equipment indicators. Starts and stops process equipment and monitors a variety of process areas for maximum efficiency.
- Operates centrifugal blowers, pumps, methane-fired electrical generators, grit collection system, clarifiers, chemical feed pumps, calibrates instruments, gravity belt thickeners, and anaerobic digesters. Troubleshoots and isolates problems in malfunctioning equipment as necessary.
- Performs corrective and preventive maintenance of plant equipment as necessary.
- Makes necessary equipment adjustments as established by Operations and Maintenance procedures and guidelines.

Qualifications

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Training:
Associate's Degree in Wastewater Treatment or related field and/or a combination of course work, experience, and training which provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities.
License or Certificate
A valid Oregon driver's license or, the ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).
Wastewater Operator 1:
- One year of experience and training in activated sludge process of wastewater treatment, or equivalent.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within two years, Grade II State of Oregon Wastewater Systems Operator's Certificate or equivalent.
Wastewater Operator 2:
- Two years of experience and training in activated sludge process of wastewater treatment, or equivalent.
- Possession of a Grade II State of Oregon Wastewater Systems Operator's Certificate or equivalent required, Grade III or IV highly preferred. Incumbent must obtain Grade III Certification prior to advancing to Salary Step 5 on the six-step salary range.
The ideal Candidate will process the knowledge and abilities below:
Knowledge of:
- Principles of activated sludge processes including aeration system, secondary clarification, return flow rate control, and wasting strategies; biological, carbon, ammonia, and phosphorous removal.
- National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) discharge permit, Lane Regional Air Protection Agency (LRAPA) air quality permit, and stormwater permit.
- Solids processing to include theory and operation of gravity belt thickening and anaerobic digestion.
- Principles of sample collection and preservation.
- Wastewater chemistry, biology, instrumentation, and automated control.
- Disinfection process using sodium hypochlorite and bi-sulfite for dechlorination purposes.
- Proper safe handling techniques when using sodium hypochlorite and bi-sulfite.
