Permit Technician
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Under the general supervision of the Chief Building Official, this position processes permit applications and assists building professionals, design professionals and the general public with building project inquiries. This position meets with design professionals and the general public at the front counter regarding general building information, plan submittal requirements, building fees and permit processing procedures. This position assists the Planning and Snowmass Arts Advisory Board by preparing agendas and public notice documents and keeping meeting minutes. May be responsible for reviewing and issuing minor permits and processing some land use cases.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Accepts building and land use permit applications, calculates and collects fees
.Enters data into a permit tracking software program in preparation for plan review when completion of the application is determined.
Issues permits when review process is completed.
Performs extensive public contact at the front counter, by email or by telephone.
Reviews plans for minor projects and issues minor permits under the direction of the Chief Building Official.
Prepares and monitors work processes from intake to issuance of a permit, including inspections and certificates of occupancy.
Prepares files for archiving according to the State of Colorado record retention schedule once the file has been closed.
Assists in preparing analytical and statistical reports on permits, construction documents, plan review activities, land use cases, and findings and inspection activities and services.
Compiles permit information; prepares reports for distribution as necessary, forwarding information to the Pitkin County Assessor monthly.
Assists the Fire Department with their permitting process and inquiries from the public regarding submittal requirements.
Maintains all Contactor’s Licensing including verification of insurance and testing.
Prepares, files and maintains land use, zoning and building files for the public record.
Serves as secretary for Building Code Board of Appeals, Planning Commission, and the Snowmass Arts Advisory Board, including drafting minutes, posting and sending agendas, and provides additional research and assistance for the boards as needed.
Researches issues for Planning Staff and handles minor land use cases such as annual temporary use permits or minor zoning compliance under the direction of the Community Development Director
.Provides a high level of professionalism and customer service at all times; establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with all co-workers, clients, professional contacts and community members; communicates respectfully and clearly.
Performs other duties as assigned, required or requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Knowledge of building construction, materials, methods, zoning and ordinances
.• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with architects, engineers, contractors, staff and the general public.
• Make accurate mathematical calculations for fees and reports.
• Good communication skills, both orally and in writing
.• Manage multiple projects and assignments
.• Excellent customer service skills
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
High school diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of two years of office/clerical experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience using Word and Excel. Work experience demonstrating attention to detail incorporating excellent customer service skills.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
To test and obtain an ICC certification as Permit Technician within six months of hire date, if required by the Chief Building Official.
EQUIPMENT USED
Copy machine, computer, calculator, plotter, voice recording devices and camera/video devices.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Ability to lift and carry objects up to 35 pounds.• Ability to conduct activities involving walking, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, twisting, reaching, balancing and climbing on a moderate basis.• Ability to work at a desk for prolonged periods of time; sitting, typing, answer the phone, etc
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The majority of this position’s duty is performed in an office environment.
